The Best and Worst Uniforms in College Football

In the past few years, teams have really reached to stick out from competition. Putting a team on the field that loses often doesn't help do that, so teams will resort to a variety of other eye-grabbers. New scoreboards, indoor facilities, and new locker rooms are just a few ways of hiding your teams underachieving, but the most in-your-face way to to cover it up is with new flashy new uniforms.

I think entirely way too much about uniforms throughout the games I watch - in all sports - and it often dictates which teams I want to win. Today, I will take you through a few of the best and worst uniforms that I've seen in today's college football world. There are some great ideas, and some atrocious ones if you ask me (which you didn't, but you're reading this, so you kind of did), but they are all interesting. Here we go.

The Bad

All of Maryland's Uniforms in the Past Few Years.

The best example of a uniform cover-up (20-30 record the last four years), Maryland football is the definition of trying too hard. They are Under Armor's test subject, their poster boys, and Under Armor is failing miserably if you ask me. Maryland has tried a variation of clown costumes including grey, white, yellow, black and just about anything else you can think of involving their loud state flag. Oh, and the first ever uniforms (that I know of) to look completely different from each side, which could potentially be a cool idea, but also just plain pointless.

Virginia Tech's Turkey and Cobblestone Helmets

The Hokies decided to experiment with a few different looks, and just like Tim Tebow's NFL career, there was a great deal of trial and error. They used turkey logos, turkey feet, whatever this is, and even some type of cobblestone design on their helmets. They claim "Oh, it's not a turkey, it's a Hokie!", but Hokies are not a real thing. What happened to the Marcus Vick days? Now those were fresh. These new plain ones? Not so much. VT has nice colors but they are another team involved in the great uniform cover up. (22-17, 12-12 in the ACC the last three years).

Any All-Orange Uniforms.

Just, no. Orange is the ugliest color you can have, outside of maybe brown, why would someone think it is a good idea to put as much of it on a uniform as possible? I'm not sure, but above is a hideous picture of an Oregon State quarterback likely throwing an interception to help prove my point.

Louisville's New "Uncaged" Uniforms

Louisville recently released these uniforms for the 2015 season and they are another example of too much. What is this demon robot bird on the side of their helmets? Louisville has a really nice logo but they choose to add this bird that belongs in a low-budget sci-fi film and blow him up on their helmet along with a red chrome face-mask. I gave up on Adidas when they put sleeves on basketball jerseys and this only confirms that I have no hope for them. Somewhere, a group of people sat in a room and thought, "Yes, I like that, that is amazing."

Any Uniform with an Over-Sized Helmet Logo. Period.

(AP)

Any time a team tries to stretch out the logo on the side of their helmet, it looks stupid to me. Oklahoma State's version is especially terrible because the logo looks like a Looney Tunes character. The Cowboys do have other options which are sharp, but I am yet to see an over-sized logo look good on a helmet.

Florida's Blue/Orange, Orange/White, Everything Else.

The alligators have always had the ugliest colors in all of sports - including the Lakers. These are obviously hideous but they also have an alternate orange jersey that they wear which adds to their hideous wardrobe. Yeah. They have consistently dressed terrible but haven't changed their uniforms to cover up their terrible play (11-13 the last two years). Maybe they should change something though, at least their colors.

Okay if your eyes made it through that section, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Here are some new ones that I've seen and really enjoyed.

The Good

Washington All-White and All-Black Uniforms.

While Washington State's logo is one of my favorite logos in sports, Washington had some fire uniforms last year. Nike redesigned them a few years ago, changing the numbers and introducing new helmets. Washington has a very unique color scheme and I never thought that purple could ever be a macho color, but Nike did a great job.

Oregon State's All-Black and All-White Uniforms.

Oregon State's new logo is really sweet, one of the few new logos in sports I actually like. Their helmets have white marks on the face-mask that look like beaver teeth, which is rather silly, but I am a fan of unique things like that. Despite being another team with orange as a primary color - and having an all-orange option which I talked about in the last section - these uniforms are fresh and Nike did a good job did a good job.

All of West Virginia's Uniforms

The Mountaineers have always had an excellent color scheme and a great logo. Although the all-yellow is rather loud for my taste, these uniforms are really clean and, for the most part, always have been. It should also be noted that the 2's and 5's are the same just upside down, but I don't care, I like the style.

All of Arizona State's Uniforms

Yeah. ASU is another team who's uniforms were redesigned by Nike a couple years ago and I think this was their best job. They introduced a new trident logo, which is awesome, and the uniforms are just as great.  This past year they experimented with a larger logo which you know I hate, along with some type of fire thing on their helmet, but they also came up with these bronze looking ones which look trill.

Navy's Uniforms vs Army in 2013

In 2013, Navy wore what I think are the nicest helmets I have ever seen, so much so that I bought some of their Rivalry Series gloves for the low. This past year they mixed them up a little bit and I wasn't a fan of the changes, but I still love the anchor logo. That with the contrast of the navy and shiny gold stripe is a great look.

Florida State's Home and Away Uniforms (black ones need work).

Despite the new logo that was forced down 'Nole fans' throats before the 2014 season, the new uniforms are extremely sharp. After they cleaned up the color scheme debacle from the opening game, the uniforms came together quite nicely. I love the design on the shoulders and the new spear on the helmets. The uniforms are sharp and are, once again, the #1 in all the land.

Thank you for reading. If you feel like I have forgotten any uniforms, feel free to comment below.
