First Quarter Observations

Eight observations from the first quarter of the regular season.

1. If Ohio State keeps winning they deserve to be #1.
I am a Florida State fan and any 'Nole fan has to relate to what is happening to Ohio State. It is hard to be the defending national champion with a team full of draft eligible juniors and taking every team's best shot. We know the struggle. Are we bitter that we lost our #1 ranking after sub par performances? Yes. But Ohio State keeps winning and that is all they have to do. Personally, I think the quarterback controversy will blow up in their face (URBAN MEYER's face) before this season is over. #TeamJTBarrett

2. We pissed off Alabama and now we have to pay.
Every time the media doubts Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide, they always seem to prove us wrong. After losing to Ole Miss, Saban probably told his team to listen to either listen to him or get the hell out of Tuscaloosa. Alabama's defense is legit and if you really watched the Ole Miss game they did not play that bad. They gave up a fluke touchdown and another touchdown that should've been called back. Anyways, the SEC is Alabama's, especially if Jake Coker can manage the young talent at wide receiver and if Derrick Henry can provide a consistent running attack.

3. The SEC is as weak as it's been in awhile.
Call me a homer, but the SEC is as weak as it has been in the last ten years. They are pretty much a summary of college football this year, a bunch of solid to good teams but no elite teams. LSU has quarterback questions but good god Leonard Fournette is a beast. Florida's defense is legit, but I still think the offense has a ways to go. Texas A&M looks better with Arizona State beating UCLA, but they struggled with an Arkansas team that is the Queen of SEC bias. Georgia's quarterback could not last at Virginia, so it was no surprise to see him struggle against Alabama. An SEC team will be in the playoff but any talk of two SEC teams in the playoff is crazy unless something changes.

4. The Pac 12 race is fun to watch.
If you can stay up past your bedtime and watch a Pac-12 game, it will be well worth it. The contenders, in my opinion are Utah, USC and UCLA. Stanford will fall on their face as Kevin Hogan is as inconsistent of any 8th-year senior you will find out there. All three of the these teams have good offense, USC and UCLA's offense are scary explosive. All three will play each other, but UCLA has Utah and USC back to back on the road at the end of the year. I have no clue who will win this conference, but the winner of the conference deserves to be in the playoff. A spoiler team could be Johnathan's beloved California Jared Goff's (Golden Bears), they can score with anybody in the country with his man crush at quarterback.

5. The last month of conference play will be ridiculous in the Big 12.
There is little to no defense played in the Big 12 and I love it. The games are always entertaining. The top-tier teams in the Big 12 are TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma with a good Oklahoma State right behind them. In the month of November, all of these teams will play each other and the Big 12 will have a high chance of becoming chaotic. Look for a ton of points and a complete lack of defense in November and the games preceding that in the Big 12. Just sit back and enjoy.

6. Florida State's win was impressive given the circumstances
Okay, this is definitely a homer pick, but I thought Florida State's win was impressive given the fact that they lost three starters in the first quarter. It was an underwhelming performance but they got the W and many other teams would have faltered if they lost their best player in the first quarter of a conference road game - especially when he is the only promising piece on the offense so far this season. Wake Forest is no power house but the win should still show that this team has guts. The 'Noles need to improve in all facets of the game and they need to make a statement this weekend against Miami.

7. Can Northwestern or Michigan ruin Ohio State and Michigan State's chances?
The media needs to slow their roll about Northwestern or Michigan being playoff contenders because they are not, but what they could be is playoff spoilers for either Ohio State or Michigan State. Harbaugh and his khakis will beat one of Ohio State or Michigan State. I'm not as sure about Northwestern yet but they could pull off an upset as well. Are the Wildcats and the Big Blue playoff contenders? Not from what I've seen, but they could both ruin the playoff chances for two teams favored to be in the College Football Playoff.

8. Gators you proved us wrong.
You got us. You proved us wrong. I thought there was a chace to squeak out a close one at home against Ole Miss but I did not see a blowout victory coming. Hats off to you Gators, but please calm down. Your defense is a top 10 defense but I still have my questions about Grier and the offense. Ole Miss' defense is talented but for some reason (NFL on their mind) they give up a ton of big plays. And as much as I love me some Chad Kelly, the kid is a ticking time bomb and Florida's defense proved that to America last Saturday night. The Gators are much better than I expected, but they'll need to beat Missouri and LSU the next two weeks and actually be considered playoff contenders. P.S. I have Mizzou beating you guys this Saturday.

My Top 15

1. Ohio State
They will be #1 until they lose, which will happen soon and Urban Meyer will likely lose his passion for coaching all of the sudden.

2. Utah
Renegade Sports is all in on the Utah bandwagon, especially since they ran the score up on Oregon in Eugene. We also idolize the play of Britain Covey (who isn't even on video game updated rosters) and his ability to not let the fact that he looks more like a golfer than a football player affect him.

3. Baylor
Baylor may have the best group of wide receivers in the nation and Seth Russell has done a great job of replacing Bryce Petty. If Shawn Oakman can teach his teammates to scare the offense like he can, Baylor could reach elite status, but do not bet on that.

4. Alabama
We made Saban mad and now we have to deal with pain he wants to inflict upon the college football world. Don't. Ever. Disrespect. Saban.

5. Michigan State
Sparty is just reliable, they will never utterly dominate a team, but will usually come out on top. Also, Connor Cook deserves more Heisman love.

6. TCU
TCU can score with the best of them but their defense is non-existent, unless they are playing Texas. Trevone Boykin gets all the Heisman attention but wide receiver Josh Doctson needs to get some serious Heisman love.

7. Clemson
Deshaun Watson gives any team a chance to win and their defense has picked up where it left off last year. Dabo still cannot dance and says weird things but hey Dabo is Dabo. Look for Clemson to Clemson at some point this year.

8. LSU
Leonard Founette. That's all you need to know about them.

9. Florida State
It is time to blow a solid team out for the first time in forever. Hopefully, it happens this weekend against Miami, but the 'Noles need to make a statement soon or they will continue to get jumped in the polls.

10. Texas A&M
I am mixed on A&M. They destroyed a seemingly overrated Arizona State team that beat UCLA last week. Then two weekends ago they struggled against Arkansas. The defense is improved and quarterback, Kyle Allen, is someone to keep an eye on.

11. Florida
Their defense is top 10 but I still question Will Grier's ability at quarterback, especially his consistency. Defense can win you ball games and that is all Florida needs to do.

12. Oklahoma
Baker Mayfield is an icon for white people who think they can dance everywhere. Oklahoma has surprised as I thought they were going to lose last weekend to West Virginia.

13. USC
Cody Kessler has a bevy of weapons at his disposal as he leads one of the most potent offenses in the nation. Depth will be a concern but the Trojans are talented and can play with anybody in the nation.

14. UCLA
I was really big on the Bruins and they let me down when they lost to the Sun Devils at home. But hey, they still have a shot of reaching the College Football Playoff.

15. Ole Miss
This team has a ton of NFL talent and hopefully the butt kicking they just got from Florida will wake them up. They could still make the playoffs as that Alabama win will keep looking better and better.
