But let's not get ahead of ourselves here Gator fans, I'm here to help you come back down to earth. You're welcome. Don't mention it.
When you hear Gators say they're playoff contenders now... |
The Ole Miss game was, without a doubt, an impressive performance. The Swamp was rocking, the defense was relentless, and Will Grier (24-29, 271 yards, 4 TD) looked like the type of Heisman candidate we know he's not behind a line that has given up just 7 sacks in three conference games. To me, Ole Miss was a perfect matchup for a Gator team that was hungry to make a statement. Ole Miss' defense - known as one of the nations best for some reason - has now given up 1,180 yards in the last three games (Bama, VANDY, UF). This defense relies on taking chances and forcing turnovers to change momentum and give their offense easy scoring opportunities, but the Gators didn't turn it over once. Instead, they forced 4 turnovers giving their own offense multiple opportunities for easy scores. Ole Miss was at the highest of highs, coming off arguably their biggest win in school history over Alabama and then avoiding a let down game against Vanderbilt. They didn't take Florida as seriously as they should've and Florida came out prepared and yearning to erase the embarrassment of the past. And they put a whooping on the Rebels on national television. Hotty freakin' Toddy.
Looking at UF's season up to this point, they are undefeated with an impressive top-10 win and undefeated conference record. That's nice, but the teams they've beat other than Mississippi are a combined 5-8 and 3-6 against Power 5 teams. Let's not overlook the Tennessee game they won by a matter of inches, the Kentucky game they escaped scoring just 14 points (Kentucky is 73rd in total defense), and East Carolina, when they won by 7 after the ECU quarterback somehow fumbled in the red zone when trying to throw a game-tying touchdown.
The way I see it, UF is a better team than they've had but not anywhere near what Marco Rubio and alligator nation want to believe right now. They played up for this game. Florida's performance was no doubt impressive and if they can play at that level all season they will be in the playoff discussion. But let's be real with ourselves, the consistency is not there for this team. I would not be surprised if they drop the game this weekend at Mizzou (4-1). After Missouri they will travel to LSU before facing Georgia. If they go 3-0 in that stretch, which is doable if they play like they did Saturday night, I will shutup. But only time will tell.
I am honestly impressed with what the Gators have done so far but do not expect it to continue. And the things that I have heard from Florida friends have left me SMHing all over the place. They expect to be in the top four, playing Alabama in the championship game, and the worst one - they say they're going to kill us at the end of the year. Now I know our 'Noles have looked rough, I'll admit it, but we are yet to play a team that we can take seriously - such as Ole Miss for UF. If the ugliness continues for the next few weeks against Miami, Louisville and at Georgia Tech - teams that can match our talent level - then we can start worrying. Right now, I have the utmost faith in the only coach in the state with 3 conference titles and a national championship to turn it around and get this team to where it needs to be. Until then, let's not forget who the king of the state is.
